President Moon Jae-in is heading for New York,... where he is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly.
The President is looking to tackle a wide range of issues,... from reviving the peace process on the Korean Peninsula to taking action in response to climate change.
Shin Se-min reports.
President Moon Jae-in is leaving for New York this afternoon... becoming the first South Korean leader to attend the UN General Assembly for three consecutive years.
With the presidential trip coming at a time... when working-level talks could be revived between Pyeongyang and WASHINGTON,... the focal point of the trip looks to be securing further momentum for the peace process on the Peninsula.
The President, on the sidelines of the UN session,... will hold a summit meeting with his American counterpart on October 23rd local time.
There, the leaders are likely to discuss working-level nuclear talks... as well as issues regarding defense cost-sharing and the ongoing trade spat between South Korea and Japan,... both of which are key U.S. allies.
On the 24th, the President will take to the podium to speak to the gathered representatives of the UN General Assembly.
“Through the keynote speech at the UN, the President plans to explain the progress made on the Korean peace process and secure the international community’s continued support on that front.”
Moon will also sit down with the president of the IOC,... with possible discussions ranging from the formation of a joint inter-Korean team in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics... to a joint bid to host the 2032 Summer Olympics.
Also on his schedule are other summits with his counterparts from Denmark and Australia,... as well as the attendance of a commemorative ceremony marking the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandi.
Eyes will fall closely... on whether the President’s trip to New York could rejuvenate the sputtering peace process on the Peninsula,... perhaps even leading to the arrangement of a third Kim-Trump summit by the year’s end.
